The Pavilion – heritage renovations in South Perth
We were approached by the owners of this beautiful 1940’s architect designed hoUSE in South Perth to design renovations and a new addition to theIR HOME.
Conservation of significant homes like this is crucial. The house makes an essential contribution to the streetscape as one of the last remaining examples of a Californian Bungalow style home in the area, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century.
Alterations and additions have been designed to be sympathetic to the heritage value, and to the language and proportions of the original home without trying to imitate or emulate.
Two very common problems with older homes that have been added to over the years are low levels of natural light combined with ineffective planning. A poorly considered 1980’s extension to the rear obstructs views and connectivity to the garden. This will be demolished to make way for a new addition with an open plan kitchen/ dining/ living area, master suite, and an outdoor living pavilion that overlooks, and directly connects with, the new landscaped gardens.
The entire home will have better light, better ventilation and better connection to the outdoors.
A skylight will transform the entrance foyer while a glazed bridge over a garden pond will provide a transition from old to new and open up views to the outdoors from first arrival.
